DORMI, BAMBINO MIO
by Maestro Nicola D'Amico (1894-1968)
The Christmas before I was born, my father wrote this Christmas carol, a lullaby for me. The title translated literally means "Sleep, Baby Mine". After Diane and I were married, I started to read through Alfred Burt's Christmas carols and discovered that her father had also written a lullaby for Diane the Christmas before she was born, entitled "Sleep, Baby Mine". When we made this discovery, it blew us away! For me, it is even more extraordinary than just the obvious coincidence, considering the probabilities of meeting any other person on earth whose father wrote a Christmas carol for them entitled "Sleep, Baby Mine".
Dormi, Bambino Mio, l'angeli é i santi
Ti guardano dal ciel', liete é festanti
La vergine Maria, Gesu bambino
Guardan' dal paradiso il tuo destino
La vita é trieste é il mondo é pien' d'inganni
Ma tu felice sei, sotto i tuoi panni
Dormi, Bambino Mio, dormi é riposa
La vita é per te, color di rosa
Dormi Bambino Mio, bambino mio
English translation: Sleep, Baby Mine, the angels and saints happily watch from heaven. The virgin Mary and baby Jesus in Paradise are watching your destiny. Life is a struggle and full of dangers, but you are safe and happy underneath your blanket and diaper. Sleep, Baby Mine, sleep and rest. Life for you is rose-colored.
